Every Mahjong group has that one house rule nobody can agree on.

The most argued about house rule is…blanks! While not an official NMJL rule, many groups (especially in the south) love to add in blank tiles for an extra twist in gameplay.

Some players swear by them and others won't touch them. If you bring it up at the wrong table, you'll get an earful either way.

If you're not sure where you stand yet - or you've been playing blanks without really thinking about the strategy behind them - we broke it all down for you.

The short version: blanks can be a powerful strategic tool, but only if you know when to use them and when to pass them. Most players don't think about it that way which means if you do, you've got an edge.
